“To create the most compelling car company of the 21st century by driving the world’s transition to electric vehicles.” It’s no secret that many people go nuts over Tesla’s cars. People wait in line for years for the latest models. They are willing to give up their hard-earned cash even to be placed on waiting lists. As for internally, employees spend many hours away from their friends, family, and social activities to dedicate themselves to pushing the company forward.
What do you think is the secret behind Elon’s ability to masterfully craft companies and teams around certain objectives? Why do you think so many people listen when he speaks? Why are people so willing to give up much of their time and lives dedicated to achieving the challenges Elon comes up with?
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
What do you think is the single most powerful thing you can do to drive a strong team toward incredible success? Comment below on what you think that one thing is…
I’ve found there is one thing you need to excel at before you can build a team that drives itself strongly toward unbelievable victory. Arguably, there are many things you must get good at to create a promising team that commands great respect for their achievements, such as a worthy mission, comradery, challenging work, order and structure, as well as the right tools for the job, accountability, and good leadership.
There still is one thing missing, vision. Vision will dictate your mission. It will direct you and your team to the challenging work. You cannot build structure and order without a target. The right tools, level of accountability, and strength of leadership needs will all be discovered once you have vision.
“To create the most compelling car company of the 21st century by driving the world’s transition to electric vehicles.” – Tesla’s Vision Statement.
When Elon creates a company, he creates a vision. Not only one for him and his future team but, a vision that spurs on the world’s imagination.
Consider that, with his company, SpaceX – he is leading the world to begin habitation on a far-off planet called Mars. This is an ambitious dream. One that is driving people to start endeavors and companies to fill in the missing pieces as well as find a renewed interest in space.
Before SpaceX, how many private space companies where there? How many satellites were being deployed? Who was thinking about mining asteroids or colonizing the moon? There were only four launch vehicle makers until SpaceX started. There are now, 37… How many more do you think will come?
Vision drives us, it paves the path toward brave new destinies. Not just any vision though, seeing things that create wonder and curiosity, hearing of how the world might certainly be a better place if your vision were to take hold. Vision that will change our lives and those around us for good.
Now that people are inspired to do incredible things to help get our species to Mars, launch vehicles are not the only thing we need. There’s a whole new, fully-fleshed system, of various industries, that must be built to support our trek to the new frontier.
WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED
With great vision, comes many branches of future possibilities. From those branches come more still. Great vision comes with practice, patience, and solid execution. If you have vision and want others to trust you with that vision, you must learn to execute well and be persistent.
Here’s an example of the tenacity it takes to execute on great vision. On the 3rd attempt at flight of the Falcon 1, SpaceX’s first vehicle, the team gathered to witness the successful flight of all their hard work. After a successful launch from the pad, an anomaly occurred causing a complete loss of the rocket and payload. As his team began to feel as if they were never going to get this right, Elon states, “I will never give up and I mean never.”
What vision do you have now? How are you practicing building vision? Leave a comment to answer those two questions. I’m curious.
